So, what did the weekend entail? Well, let me interject the fact that my only real criticism of the THATCamp format is that there are usually 3-5 sessions offered at the same time, and I usually want to go to ALL of them! So take a look at the blog for the full schedule of sessions and workshops. […]

One other thing is that a lot of digital cameras come equipped with the zoom lens that enables more or less of your scene to get included by indicates of ‘zooming’ in and out. All these changes in concentration length are typically reflected whilst inside the viewfinder and on significant display screen proper at the back of the specific camera.

The implementation cost is low. However, many users have concerns about security risks involved in using free CMS. Proprietary CMS on the other hand can cost you more, however, there is no security threat for users. It is mainly developed by a vendor or owned by the developers. So, whatever you choose, select as per your budget and business requirement.

I worked with some 9/11 slides as an intern in 2010, and they were coming loose in their mounts. Even still photos need temperature and humidity control that is not supplied due to expense, The easiest thing is to scan and digitize them, but then hard drives will wear out…
I was hoping to find others concerned with this issue. Maybe there will be standardization of hardware and eventually there will be a little piece of metal in a hard drive that can be swapped out, as books can be re-bound. Cloud computing gets a lot of attention, but there has to be a server somewhere, and servers aren’t forever, either. I was hoping to meet some hardware geeks, because a hardware solution would be nice.
Looking forward to THATCamp.

When I worked as public historian at a large NY archive, I was told repeatedly over many years by different officials that time-based media (film, video, digitally based moving images) were not part of collections and could not be because of problems with the format changes and lack of money for continually updating and migration. This of course was slightly ironic, because in fact, items that were time-based media did in fact end up in collections due to the nature of 20th and 21st century events which were being documented. Thus, when September 11th occured, many items on film came into collections, without a real policy on how to deal with the issues you raise. Naturally, for that historical repository like many, if not most archives, the reality had exceeded the institution’s capacity to plan and deal with the media that were arriving on the doorstep. You pose a widespread planning issue that is being wrestled with at different levels, and will not be solved piecemeal at each collecting institution. Glad you are talking about it.

Even as a curator myself, I did not realize how close to viable the VR process was, I want to learn more and sign up for your session. Hope the files aren’t so huge that I can eventually use them on my independent scholar type websites. Thanks.

Been working with an advisory group of school-age students (5th graders) this year who want to be able to wander the museum freely with GPS systems and access information — Geotagging seems like a plausible option for information access and navigation. I’d love to chat about the programmatic side of these questions – I wonder if its call for another session – or rather, an extension of this one…

I particularly would like to see more examples of LOD in action, so I can understand better how to implement it with collections I am working on.

I personally don’t like to take photos at museums, but I sometimes wish afterwards that I had done so. A couple of years ago I was writing about the temporary First Ladies exhibit at the NMAH and wished I had taken photos – imagine my surprise when I found that I could re-visualize the entire exhibit using photos from Flickr, from a diverse group of visitors!

Would love to hear more about this session! I’ll be volunteering so I’m unsure if I’ll be able to attend, but I do want to hear your thoughts afterward if possible. As an educator and avid museum-goer, I’ve been on both sides of this problem. It’s a sticky situation.

The best thing about THATCamps is that newbies can and should help lead the conversation. We have a lot of session opening and a group of people that I am sure will be interested in the kinds of things you are talking about so definitely make a proposal!

I wouldn’t mind participating in a general session about what job museums and archives do, and if they face disruption by good-enough alternatives that might or might not be in the same business space. If people think that this would be interesting, I wouldn’t mind trying to come up with something based off of Clayton Christensen’s work on Disruption Theory.

If you have an idea to throw into the mix however, please put it forward here or to thatcampmuseumsnyc[at]bgc[dot]bard[dot]edu and we will try to get it into the weekend’s conversation. We are trying to share as much of the event as possible so you’ll probably get a chance to see some artifact of the conversation at some point.

While commercial applications of virtual reality explode on your mobile screen, the history potential of the smart phone valiantly struggles to catch up. The Digital Humanities team of Kathleen Hulser and Steve Bull have been experimenting with history on the hoof. They concoct augmented reality scenarios that turn the smart phone into a history translator that conjures buried archival materials into real world contexts. Two recent forays show the potential for plucking history from the scholarly realm and popping it into surprising settings. “Tecumseh” summons an image of the Shawnee leader who tried to found a Pan-Indian Nation, during the War of 1812. No, Indians
aren’t erased from the history, they’ve just been waiting in your mobile to re-materialize. Bull lurked amidst classical busts in the gardens of the Villa dei Pini, Bogliasco ITALY, to install “inVisible Presence” using augmented reality to make the men of marble mobilize their thoughts.
