Session Proposal: Working with student digital exhibitions

Let’s have a discussion about pedagogy and learning around the use of digital exhibitions.  We have tried a variety of methods at the Bard Graduate Center in our courses.  I would like to share ideas about best practice and how this mode of presentation is particularly useful for the study of material culture.  What are the best platforms?  How do we integrate into the curriculum and academic program?

I've been involved in lots of new media projects on the new media production side, including several collaborations with ASHP and CHNM such as History Matters, EDSITEment Lessons of History, and Picturing U.S. History. I also have been working on the pedagogy side in the scholarship of teaching and learning with various projects including the Visible Knowledge Project and also some essay writing in JAH. Lately at the BGC we've been busy incorporating new media in our material culture curriculum with the building of a new Digital Media Lab and related faculty development work. You can see the fruits of that effort in the student digital exhibition (a BGC-NYPL collaboration) I've listed that came out of a nineteenth-century material culture of New York course. Other research interests include Early American material and visual culture.
